The Bluebirds were under the guidance of manager Bill Jones in the early 1960’s as he was in charge till the year 1962. He saw his Cardiff City side struggle out of the first division at the end of the 1961 – 1962 campaign and George Swindin took charge at the club in 1962, for a two year spell in charge at the club. Swindin saw his Cardiff side suffer a 15th position finish at the end of the 1963 – 1964 campaign and Jimmy Scoular took charge at the club in 1964, going on to become one of the clubs most successful ever managers. He guided the Bluebirds to the semi finals of the league cup in 1966 as they suffered defeat against West Ham united in the last four of the cup competition. The Bluebirds enjoyed a fine run at the end of the 1960’s, narrowly missing out on a place in the first division as they finished the 1968 – 1969 season off in fifth position which was followed by a seventh position finish at the end of the following campaign.
Scoular guided Cardiff City in to the semi finals of the European Cup Winners cup in the 1967 – 1968 season as they suffered defeat against SV Hamburg to narrowly miss out on a place in the European final.
